A journey from being a brewer to be the Biotech Queen is a result of untainted determination and willpower. She has proved to the world that every idea can be given wings and every journey can be covered if one has the fire in the belly and the determination to succeed.
Today, Ms.Kiran Majumdar needs no introduction and is known to be the Biotech queen. She started her professional journey as a trainer in 2004 and went ahead to become the Chairman and Managing Director of India’s largest Biotechnology Company.
Born on March 23, 1953, in Bangalore, and got her schooling at Bishop Cotton Girls School and Mount Carmel School at Bangalore, She completed her B.Sc in Zoology at Bangalore University in 1973, she went to Ballarat University in Melbourne, Australia, and got her qualification as a brewer.
Her professional journey started as a trainee brewer in Carlton & United beverages in 1974. In 1978, she joined Biocon Biochemical Limited as a Trainee Manager in Ireland.
This year Kiran Mazumdar founded Biocon India in collaboration with Biocon Biochemical Limited
In the start days, she faced many challenges like funds for the business, banks did not support her fully in giving loans as then, biotechnology was totally new field.
As a first operation, Biocon started to extract an enzyme from Papaya. Madam Kiran transformed Biocon from an industrial enzyme company to an integrated biopharmaceutical company, This was all possible due to her extraordinary leadership quality. Today Biocon is recognized as India’s largest biotech company.
Biocon started as an industrial enzyme manufacturing hub and later exporting to the USA and Europe. The company focused on the discovery of novel enzymes and novel techniques for the development of solid fermentation technology through research and development and that took the company’s operations to a new dimension. In 1989, Biocon became the first Indian biotech company to receive US funding for biotech technology.
On personal grounds Kiran Majumdar Shaw has achieved many pretentious awards like ET Business of the year, best women entrepreneur, Model Employer, Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the year for life sciences and healthcare, a leading exporter, outstanding citizen, Padmashree-1989 and Padma Bhushan- 2005.
Today Biocon stands strong, from a brewer to becoming the biotech queen, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw managed to take multiple risks to build a business within the business. It just like a natural evolution within a very short time span. Though she did not understand what joint venture meant in her initial days, today she makes deals every month and every quarter.
Kiran Mazumdar Shaw has also been involved with several philanthropic activities. She runs a CSR wing called Biocon Foundation that focuses on health, education, and infrastructure in rural areas. She supports the Arogya Raksha Yojana and also established Mazumdar Shaw Cancer Center in Bangalore.
Thus, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw’s journey from being an entrepreneur who began as a trainee and is now one of the most powerful women in the world is a masterpiece of inspiration to all the leaders in our country. It proves that there is no limit to a determined entrepreneur.
